Discussing the Prices.
Mr. Balashov: Nice to meet you, Mr.Crown. Are you all right after your long journey from Canada?
Mr. Crown: Oh, quite. Actually the flight was very nice.
B: Sit down, please and make yourself comfortable. Shall we start with coffee or get down to business straight away?
C: Perhaps, we’ll start the talks and have coffee later.
B: As you like. What shall we start with?
C: You have seen our machine-tools in operation, haven’t you?
B: Yes, we have. And we are more or less satisfied with their performance.
C: I am glad to hear that. Perhaps, we’ll start with the price and the terms of delivery? Would you like us to quote c.i.f. or f.o.b. price?
B: As a matter of fact we’ve got your price-list. Is it the latest?
C: Let me have a look. Yes, it’s our latest price-list. You
seem to be well equipped for the talks, and what is your opinion?
B: As to my opinion, c.i.f. prices would be preferable. Is your price subject to a discount?
C: If you mean a trade discount, we don’t have it in our practice, but if you order a great number of machine-tools or pay in cash, then you are granted a discount.
B: Oh, I see. And what do you consider “a great number”?

C: Over 75 units, let’s say.
B: What discount will be then?
C: Well, Mr.Balahov, perhaps we’ll come from theoretical discussion to the ground. I wish you would name me the exact number of machine-tools you require and we’ll go on from there.
B: All right, Mr.Crown, we’re going to order 100, if the price is reasonable.
C: In that case we’ll give you a 15% discount.
B: Could it be 25%?
C: That’s a bit too much. We shall meet you half-way, though, and make it 20%, but that’s final.
B: I agree.
C: Shall we consider the price problem settled?
B: Yes, it’s c.i.f. price St. Petersburg with a 20 per cent discount. A good beginning makes a good ending, doesn’t it?
C: You are quite right. Well begun is half done, as they say.
B: When shall we meet again?
C: Tomorrow morning at 10.
B: O.K. See you tomorrow.
