STAFF APPRAISAL

Staffappraisalsareveryimportant. They can make the difference between successful team and personnel disaster.

Appraisals are an opportunity to discuss the employee’s performance. Set a time and date for the appraisal. Try to get an objective view of the employee’s performance by asking other members of the managing team for their opinions. Don’t take calls or allow interruption during the appraisal. This shows that you take the procedure seriously. Listen to the employee. Don’t talk too much yourself, even if you think that your knowledge can solve the employee’s problems. Don’t give only critics. If the appraisal is too negative, the employee may become demotivated.

Appraisals can also be too positive, so that the employee thinks ‘I am so good, there is nothing I need to improve’. You can avoid both of these traps by using the company standards and the job description to measure how well the employee is doing. Write up the results promptly.
