LOGGING OPERATIONS
Before any logging operations are started, it is important to know as much as possible about the area, timber and terrain where it is intended to work. The main information necessary is:
a) timber stands in the area by species and value, particularly those species that are clearly known on the markets;
b) climatic conditions;
c) type of terrain;
d) possible routes and methods of extraction;
e) availability of labour;
f) local conditions and other details of similar methods
An experienced logging concern has all this information, and what more, before any operational plans, either for logging or milling are made.
Where there are few maps, little local knowledge and poor communication, the first step in the exploration is an aerial survey. An aerial survey doesn't, require a great deal of ground, work prior to the survey. An aerial survey will give the main features of the country and indicate concentrations of timber. It will also indicate
possible routes into the concentrations of timber and provide data sufficient for a map in addition countours. If this knowledge is available to the ground survey party, a great deal of time can be saved. An aereal survey is but the first step in exploration, since the information gained is only of value to a logging сопсегц when used by their ground party. No actual logging operations can be.planned on an aereal survey since it will not give the prime factor in logging, i.e. the amount of timber in volume and the quality in the area. The ground survey party will fill in the blanks in the areal survey map. It is the forest engineer's job, in charge of the ground survey, to produce detailed maps and a working or extraction programme after the survey is completed.

LOGGING OPERATIONS
Forest work requires long-term planning. The extraction plan should therefore include the following information in one form or another:
a) stand of timber by species, quantity and quality;
b) location of timber;
c) extraction method in detail from stump, including the felling arrangements and instructions to fellers
d) roads and skidding paths (either tractor or cable);
e) location of logging camps;
f) detailed specification of machinery and equipment required and some other factors.
Felling: It is considered that power saw felling should only be resorted to in the event of, a shortage of labour for hand felling with the axe and cross-cut saw. Attempts to introduce power saws where suitable manual labour is available and have proved uneconomical. This is especially so in these countries, where labour is uneducated and not mechanically minded. In such areas it is possible in the event of a end labour shortage to operate power saws for bucking only, but they should be confined to work at the landings where conditions are as near as possible ideal.
