Warming up. Explain this proverb and give examples “Things are not always what they seem.”

 

“Manners or the law?” Find out the mistakes (1 or 2) in each sentences.

a) In France you shouldn’t sit down in a café until you’ve shakeen hands with everyone you know.

b) In India and the Middle East, you must never use the left hand for greting, eating or drinkking.

c) In Russia, you must match your hosts drink for drink or they will think you unfriendli.

d) In Ireland, soscial events sometimes end with singging and dancing. You may be asked to sing.

Example: They must be out. There aren’t any lights on. She must have a lot of money. She drives a Porsche. b. When you think something is possible: may/might. Example: His phone’s switched off. He might be on the plane now. She might not like that skirt. It’s not her style. c. When you think something is not possible/not true: can’t Example: He can’t be ill. I saw him at the gym.
