THE ROBOTS INVADING OUR HOMES

So what are household robots and what do they do? You probably have heard something about three D's - Dull, Dirty and Dangerous. This is a designation for jobs that are usually entrusted to robots. Maybe chores are not very dangerous but they can be rather dirty and dull.

Robots continue to infiltrate our homes, simplifying the most annoying household chores and freeing up users' time. Here are the devices that may one day become as mainstream as microwave ovens and dishwashers.

iRobot'sRoomba is one of the most popular automatic vacuuming devices on the market. It cleans by sizing up a room, and then traveling over floors in zig-zag pattern. Newer Roombas can be programmed to vacuum during certain days and times. Another device of the kind has taken the routine a step further – it can vacuum and wash floors simultaneously.

Such devices rely on an ultrasound system to navigate around objects as they clean.

The Looj, also by iRobot, addresses one of the most tedious aspects of owning a house: cleaning its gutters. Users can operate the device using a remote.

And when you can't be at home to interact with family members, iRobot has yet another solution: ConnectR. This robot features a camera and speaker phones that people around it use to communicate with those offsite. Remote users can manipulate the camera and steer the robot through their computers.

Robomow: Friendly Robotics takes robotics outside with its automatic lawn mowers. The company's four models rely on batteries instead of gas and are equipped with anti-theft systems.

Agent 007: MobileRobots Inc. has adapted the same technology it uses in its laboratory robots to its line of "home helpers." The Agent 007, pictured, is equipped with a security camera and can announce "Police! Freeze" if an intruder opens a window. The company uses similar technology for its Jeeves and BrewskiBot models, which can shuttle drinks to party guests.

The Litter-Robot addresses one of the downsides of owning a cat: cleaning its litter box. The device sifts through kitty litter, removing clumps automatically and storing them in a bag.
