DESCRIPTION:This Speakıng II Course is designed according to the plan based on the experience and analysis obtained in the previous years. In this course, a variety of methods, strategies and techniques are used: work in groups, discussion, individual work which are approriate for the age and understanding abilities of the students. During the lessons, computers, smart boards and internet sources are used. Ss read the given newspaper articles, discuss prepared questions, watch short movies from youtube. These activities and topics are also interesting enough to motivate and participate in lessons. Ss not only practice the target language, but also expand their general knowledge.

 

 

COURSE OUTCOMES: Students will be able to

Students will have both Universal Outcomes and Professional Outcomes.

 

а) Universal:

Students will be able to:

 

1-       Read a newspaper article

2-       Express their thoughts and feelings about a certain topic

3-       Debate

4-       Think over the topic critically

5-       Make a long speech

 

б) Professional

Students will:

 

1-       be able to read academic texts with special ability

2-       be able to improve their English language knowledge which is very essential in their professional life

3-       be aware of newspaper vocabulary which consists of the words which are used broadly in most domains, but are not necessarily frequent in other domains.

4-       Be able to understand listening something in either British or American english taken from youtube

 

REQUIREMENTS: ( Important )

· Attendance counts! If students are late more than 5 minutes for class and/or if students leave class early, it will count as an absence. IAAU attendance policy will be strictly followed.

· Students may miss only 16 hours of class. Medical reports or other documents areNOTaccepted according to the principles of the university. So, students are recommended to miss those 6 hours only in case of emergency. 

· It is students’ responsibility to arrange their work hours, child-care and appointments etc. so they do not conflict with class. If students are absent, they must ask their group mates to get missed assignments and review the main points of the lesson. (you get no extra credit for attending class.)

· If you miss a class, YOU are responsible for finding out what you missed and for making up any work that you missed.

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE ( Important )

· Work quietly and respectfully in class with no side conversations at the tables, except during assigned activities.

· TURN OFF TELEPHONES! Leaving to answer phones, going to the restroom, coming in excessively late or seeing a counselor are not acceptable.

·   Moving around the room or falling asleep during a lecture is also not acceptable. STAY IN YOUR SEAT THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE CLASS!

· You will be asked to leave if your behavior is inappropriate and it will be considered an absence.

 

Class assignment and grading

This class is a credit class: however, to pass this class, you must be earning a 60 % (C) average or better by the end of the semester. All TEST GRADES are based on a percentage unless otherwise stated. Your midterm and semester grade will be based on the following:

MIDTERM: ( max 100 % )

1. Active and Meaningful participation in Classroom Discussions: 10 %

This means that you make your own comments, ask questions, listen to others attentively and express your own original opinions. Try to find convincing arguments to support your viewpoints.

 

2.Speech ( 10 %) Each student is to prepare a 10 min speech related to the topic discussed in the previous lesson. Grading criteria: fluency 10%

In order to get 10 points, a student is expected to speak fluently. According to fluency problem and grammar mistakes, the grade may be lowered. For a minute less than the required time, 2 points will be subtracted.

 

3. Presentation: ( 20% )

( how much prepared - presentation 5 %, fluency and comprehensibility 10% , grammar 5% )

Presentation: between 10 min ( for each minute 4 points )

Due date: will be informed by an instructor throughout the semester.

Topic should be related to one of those topics held in class and Ss must make sure that the topic they have chosen is appropriate and the speech must include the student’s opinion.

 

4. Examination: 60 %( No extra time is given to students who come late to class on those days )

Students will talk about the topics given by an instructor or about the topics they study in the class.

( Understand speaking scoring criteria: Answer to question 10%,fluency 30% , grammar 10%, )

 

FINAL EXAM: ( max 100 % )

3. Debate: (20%)

Criteria: Ss will be divided into teams, then they are to choose one controversial topic suggested by an instructor. They should get prepared for the debate on the day shown in the table below. Each speaker is expected to make a speech giving his or her argument. There should be three arguments. Each should be supported by examples, facts or details. For further information about the process of a debate, ask your instructor.

Grading criteria:

Fluency 10 %, for each argument supported by appropriate information and their use 2 %, Tone of voice, clarity of expression, precision of arguments all contribute to keeping audience’s attention and persuading them of the team’s case 4%

In case a student is unable to make sure the opponents understand the speech, 10% won’t be given. Therefore, it’s student’s responsibility others understand the speaker.

Time is very essential. For a minute less than required time, 2 points will be subtracted.

NOTE: The due dates for the topic proposal and paper are indicated in the daily schedule of the syllabus.

 

Make-up works

Make-up examinations will be given only in cases of extreme emergency. You are expected to notify me as soon as possible and to discuss you circumstances with me. Do not otherwise assume that you will be permitted to take a make-up exam. However, you are recommended not to miss any examinations.

Cheating/Plagiarism

Student will be asked to leave a room for cheating and gets 0 (zero) for exam

Note:

· The contents of this syllabus may be changed as needed

· It is the responsibility of each student to know what changes

· My campus e-mail is for messages or course-related inquiries only;

· no papers will be accepted for grading via e-mail (always submit hard copy on the date due)

· Students are also expected to bring the textbook, or a copy of each reading assignment as we will review and discuss the assignments.
