The problem of getting a job. The procedure of employment.



After graduating from college many of us will face the problem of getting a job.

It is not an easy matter to be employed nowadays. What must we begin with?

First of all we should think over what kind of job we want, what we appreciate, an interesting environment, a chance to make a career, a big salary and so on.

Then we are to study the market of the offered vacancies in the ads that are published in different newspapers, paying attention to the activities of company, the prospects of its development, the demands and duties of the position being offered.

If we find a suitable offer we should analyse our skills, educational level and personal traits. In case we find the offer acceptable we should address the employment agency and get in touch with the agency counselor to make an appointment with him for an interview.

We should carefully get ready for the interview and prepare all the necessary documents, paying special attention to composing a resume that includes personal information, job objective, educational level, experience, skills and extracurricular activities for an applicant.

We should also find the people who may give us the necessary reference, describe our qualification for a job.

Our resume must be typed on a computer without any spelling mistakes and according to the common standard.

When all the documents are ready we should think over the interview, possible questions and answers, our behaviour, manners, our appearance.

A business meeting is not an evening party, that is why I should not use a lot of make up, only a bit of it to look more expressive. First of all I should take care of my hair style. I shall wash my hair, curl it and make a hairstyle trying to make my hair look natural, fresh, shining. Then I shall think of my nails and hands. I won t paint my nails in a bright colour. It should correspond to my clothes and lipstick.

In a word, I d like to look modest but fashionable and elegant.

All this will help us to make the best impression and to be offered the chosen position.

 

№ 6 Supposing you are an applicant to a large company. You want a job very much. You have come to an appointment with the manager of the Company. Introduce yourself, try to make a good impression and prove you are the very person the company needs.

1. How do you do! Let me introduce myself. I am… I am about twenty. I am from… I come from … (family). I live with my parents.

2. I have read the advertisement about the vacancy of a secretary of the company I d like to have a chance. I think I ll manage to meet the demands you suggest.

3. I have just graduated from the college where I got a very qualified training as a secretary –referent. I am quite good at typing, shorthand, computing, business correspondence. My graduating marks can prove my knowledge.

4. More than that I possess a certain knowledge of English. I can speak, read, write business letters and telexes.

5. As to my personal qualities I dare say I am quite easy to deal with, sociable, good-natured, polite and responsible. I like to arrange different things, to be in the center of different events. In a word, I think the profession of a secretary corresponds to my character.

6. I d like to develop on my educational and cultural level. I am a book- lover, fond of theatre, like serious music.

7. Оf course, I have no experience yet, but I think I can see the peculiarities of the profession, be devoted to business and the company. I am sure I will not fail if you give me a chance to try.

 

 

№ 7 What is a modern office like? What equipment should it be supplied with? What equipment can you work at?

A modern office nowadays includes all modern equipment, such as a telephone, a typewriter, a computer with a word processor and a printer, a telex, a photocopier, a fax- machine, an electronic calculator and so on.

It is more preferable to have a computer in the office than a usual typewriter, because with the computer the typist can type a letter and then see what she has typed on an electronic screen (display) and correct any mistakes before the printer types a letter. The computer can print many separate copies with different addresses and names.

If you have to do some calculations you may use an electronic calculator.

A photocopier is necessary for making copies. In case you want to send a written message quickly, you can use a telex. This is a machine like a typewriter: a message is typed and then another telex machine somewhere else receives the message and then types it out again. A fax machine is more popular now. It makes copies and sends it to any other fax machine. Messages can be written by hand or typed. They can also include drawings. A fax machine is connected with the telephone, so it is called a telefax.
