Basic Tools Unit 9.
Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today at our lessons we'll talk about different tools that can be used at oil rigs. Some of them are quite common, and widely used in our routine life. Some of them are basically used at oil rigs or at wellbores. Our first lesson is devoted to commonly used tools. First of all read the definitions provided in below given table and try to translate the name of tools into Russian. In case you are puzzled how to define a tool in Russian you may peep at the table, provided below at the bottom of document. (plan of the lesson)

| Drill bits | It is a cutting tool that is attached to a drill and use d to make cylindrical holes. |
| A saw | It is a metal tool used for cutting metal or wood. It has a handle and a flat blade, with sharpened teeth on one edge. |
| A hammer | It is a long-handled tool that is used for putting nails in wood. It has a heavy metal top that is flat on one side. |
| A chisel | It is a tool with a sharp, flat, metal edge, is used cut stone or wood. |
| A spanner | It is a round - ended metal tool that fits over a nut. It is used to loosen or tighten the nut. |
| pliers | Are a small metal tool , formed from two pieces of crossed metal, used for gripping small objects or for shaping and cutting wire. |
| A screwdriver | It is a tool with a piece of metal extending from a handle. The metal has a blade that is used to turn screws. |
| A welder | It is a person whose job involves joining pieces of metal together. |
| A hacksaw | It is a type of a saw that has small teeth on its blade. It is often used to cut metal. |
| A file | It is a metal tool with a rough surface that is used to smooth wood or metal |
| A grinder | It is a machine with a rough wheel that is used to finish metal surface |
| Pipe wrench | It is a metal tool used to provide grip on pipes, in order to turn them. |
Now when you know the names of objects will you be so kind to do this job. You've got pictures of different tools. Label them. One name can be used twice.

And at our second lesson we would like to talk about tools that are traditionally used in the oil field. (especially at oil rigs).
1.Try to understand what each tool is used for looking at definitions provided below. If it is difficult you may use Russian translation, provided below the first table.

| pig | It is a device that is sent down pipelines in order to scrape them clean. |
| swage | It is a device used to straighten any damaged or collapsing piping that holds the well walls open. |
| Hydraulic tool | It is a tool that uses water or oil pressure in order to work |
| Mechanical tool | It is a tool that is powered by machine or system of moving parts. |
| Fluid bailer | It rises up and down inside an oil well in order to remove water or and fluids. |
| Gas buster | It is device that is used to take unwanted gas out of fluids, in particular from drilling fluid. |
| Intensifier | It is a down hole tool that increases the impact of applied forces. |
| Drilling jar | It is a device that uses a jarring motion. It can be used to release a stuck drill pipe, for light drilling and for many other purposes. |
| packer | It is a device that is put down a wellbore. It than expands and seals the wellbore. |
| Bumper subs | It is a type of a fishing tool. It hits stuck objects in a downward or upward motion , in order to free them. |
| Fishing jar | It is used to strike another drilling component in order to retrieve lost parts or remove blockage s from the wellbore. |
| Overshot | It is a type of a tool used for fishing. It is lowered inside the piping, where it grips the lost item, allowing it to be pulled out. |
