Introduction to Generators
You are well familiar with flash-lights and portable radios which use batteries as their source of power. In these applications the current drawn from the battery is comparatively small and a battery can supply the current for a long time, even without recharging. Batteries work satisfactorily when they supply devices which require little currents.
But many kinds of electrical equipment require large amounts of current at a high voltage in order to do their job. For example, heavy motors require larger voltages and currents than could be furnished by any battery. Sources of power other than batteries are therefore required to supply large amounts of power.
These large amounts of power are supplied by rotating electrical machines called "generators". They can supply either a.c. or d.c. power.

The Elementary Generator
An elementary generator consists of a loop of wire so placed that it can be rotated in a uniform magnetic field to cause an induced current in the loop. Sliding contacts are used to connect the loop to an external circuit in order to use the induced e.m.f.
The pole pieces are the north and south poles of the magnet which supplies the magnetic field. The loop wire which rotates through the field is called "armature". The ends of the armature loop are connected to rings called "slip rings" which rotate with the armature.
As the sides of the loop cut through the magnetic field, an e.m.f. is induced in them which causes a current to flow through the loop, slip rings, brushes, a centre-zero ammeter and a load resistor – all connected in series. The magnitude of the induced e.m.f. generated in the loop, and therefore of the current that flows, depends on the position of the loop in relation to the magnetic field.
