E.g. ‘sofa, ‘murder, ‘stupid.
2. В трех- и четырехсложных словах ударение обычно падает на третий слог от конца, причем ударная гласная произносится кратко, согласно своему чтению в закрытом слоге. E.g. ‘document, ‘different, ‘general.
3. Если слово состоит из четырех и более слогов, то оно обычно имеет два ударения: главное – на втором или третьем слоге от конца, и второстепенное – на первом или втором слоге от начала. E.g. ,possi’billity, o,rigi’nality, ,patroni’nymic.
4. В существительных с суффиксом –tion главное ударение падает на гласную, предшествующую суффиксу. E.g. ‘station, po’sition, a’ffection.
5. В словах с префиксами a-, be-, com-, con-, dis-, mis-, in-, im-, pre-, re-, ударение падает на второй слог. E.g. a’bout, a’maze, pre’pare.
6. В сложных словах существительных (образованных путем словосложения), как правило, ударение падает на первый слог.
Ex. 1. Read the following words:
stipend, absent, artist, worker, letter, turner, whisper, student, window, member, number, napkin, paper, writer, popular, policy, natural, family, victory, capital, ability, development, political, activity, necessity, difficult, appetite, memorize, exercise, extremety, university, originality, examination, patronymic, conversation, revolution, intonation, intractability, introductory, indivisible, anniversary, condition, production, affection, addition, injection, imagination, interruption, dislike, dismiss, mistake, prepare, remake, compare, consult, import, important, repeat, informal, newspaper, bookshelf, textbook, notebook, classroom, Englishman, grandfather, blacksmith.
Ex. 2. Divide the words into syllables ( /), and put the stress, e.g.: ‘ fu / ture :
Nature, brightly, colony, paying, floor, discover, listen, around, marry, over, affection, anniversary,
imagination, dislike, turner.

ИНТОНАЦИЯ
What is intonation?
Intonation is about how we say things, rather than what we say. Without intonation, it’s impossible to understand the expression and thoughts that go with words. Listen to somebody speaking without paying attention to the words: the “melody” you hear is the intonation. It has the following features:
- It’s divided into phrases, also known as “tone-units”.
- The pitch moves up and down, within a “pitch range”. Everybody has their own pitch range. Languages, too, differ in pitch range. English has particularly wide pitch range.
- In each tone unit, the pitch movement (a rise or fall in tone, or a combination of the two) takes place on the most important syllable syllable known as the “tonic-syllable”. The tonic-syllable is usually a high-content word, near the end of the unit.
- These patterns of pitch variation are essential to a phrase’s meaning. Changing the intonation can completely change the meaning.
Example: Say: “It’s raining”. Now say it again using the same words, but giving it different meaning. You could say it to mean “What a surprise!”, or “How annoying!”, or “That’s great!”. There are many possibilities.
Intonation exists in every language. However, students are often so busy finding their words that intonation suffers. Yet intonation can be as important as word choice – we don’t always realize how much difference intonation males:
- awareness of intonation aids communication.
- incorrect intonation can result in misunderstandings, speakers losing interest or even taking offence!
The intonation phrase (IP) is the basic unit of intonation. In phonetic analysis, the vertical bar symbol (|) is used to represent the boundary between two intonation phrases.
E.g.: At the age of eight | I went to school.
Stress (') is the degree of emphasis given a sound or syllable in speech. Secondary stress is the weaker of two degrees of stress in the pronunciation of a word.
Rhythm is the sense of movement in speech, marked by the stress, timing, and quantity of syllables.
Types of tone:
Fall, low-rise, high- fall, fall-rise.
Fall (a falling tone) is the most common used tone of all. It signals a sense of finality, completion, belief in the content of the utterance.
Low Rise (a rising tone) is used when the speaker is sure that he does not know the answer, and the addressee knows the answer.
High Rise (a rising tone). If the tonic stress is uttered with extra pitch height, we may think that the speaker is asking for the repetition or clarification or indicating disbelief.
E.g.: A.: She passed her DRIVing test.
B.: She PASSED? (disbelief)
Fall-rise signals dependency, continuity, and non-finality. It generally occurs in sentence non-final intonation units.
Intonation doesn’t exist in isolation. So it makes sense to approach it together with other factors.
Intonation and grammar
- Wh-word questions: falling intonation (↓).
'What is your (fall) ↓ name?
'Where are you (fall) ↓ from?

'How 'many 'books are there in your (fall) ↓ bag?
- Yes/No questions?: rising (↑)
'Are they in (rise) ↑Liverpool?
'Did you play 'tennis (rise) ↑ yesterday?
'Does your 'sister ‘study (rise) ↑ English?
- Statements, Imperative Mood : falling

Intonation and attitude
It’s important that students aware of the strong link between intonation and attitude, even if it’s difficult to provide rules here.
- The first thing for students to recognise the effect of intonation changes.
E.g. : firstly say “cucumbers” with an “interested” intonation; then “uninterested”. Afterwards use such attitudes, such as “enthusiastic”, “bored”, “surprised”, “relieved.
Intonation and discourse
Read a shopping dialogue, following the instruction:
‘new’ information = fall tone; “shared” knowledge = fall-rise
Shop assistant: Can I help you?
Customer: I’d like a chocolate (fall) ice-cream.
Shop assistant: One chocolate (fall-rise) ice-cream. Anything else?
Customer: One strawberry (fall) ice-cream.
Shop assistant: One chocolate (fall), one strawberry (fall). Anything else?
Customer: Yes. One chocolate (fall), one strawberry (fall), and one vanilla (fall-rise).
Task 1. Practice the reading of the shopping dialogue above according to the guidelines: ‘new’ information = fall tone; “shared” knowledge = fall-rise (i.e. down and up).
Task 2. Test reading of the dialogue.
Task 3. Mark the stresses and tunes. Read the following conversations.
a) What is your name?
My name is George.
b) Where are you from?
I’m from Wales.
c) Where do you live?
