INTRODUCTION
Modern life would be impossible without the ability to speak correct, up-to-date English. As a social skill communication comes first in the history of humanity, it is essential for everyone who is willing to bring across one’s feelings, thoughts and desires. Everyone who is interested in improvement of their speaking skills and grammar is destined to open an English textbook of some kind not once in their lives. This textbook is created by experienced authors, lecturers of saint-Petersburg State Institute of Cinema and Television who are fond of everything connected with cinema and television. This book deals with familiar topics of work, travel, personality, language, business and advertising in an unusual way – viewed from the standpoint of a modern student, the book treats these topics as a way to improve not only grammar or vocabulary awareness, but language competence and general erudition per se. It will make anyone who reads it familiar with modern cultural tendencies.
This textbook represents Part I of a larger two-part tutorial of the same name. From its nine chapters prepared by S. Pankratova and K. Vyalyak you will learn about such tenses as Present, Continuous, Perfect and Future, means of comparison and irregularity of verbs and other tricky grammar questions. Besides topics, listed in the contents (work, travel, personality, language, business and advertising) which are accompanied by modern informative texts like «Before They Were Stars», «Why Learn English with Movies and Films?», «On Advertising in Movies» «Filmmaking Business In the Making», questions and exercises, aimed at developing your reading skills, you will have a chance to practice your translation skills as well as communication skills by being engaged in discussion on burning issues of today. There are tasks which will help you develop your translation skills based on professional cinematographic terms and collocations. Authors hope that the book will be helpful to students learning English for special purposes as well as to the general audience.
