Tell me about the system of education in Belarus.

1)Every citizen of our country has the right to education. This right is guaranteed by the Constitution. It’s not only a right but a duty, too. Every boy or girl must get secondary education.

Education in Belarus is compulsory up to the 9th form inclusive. The stages of compulsory schooling in Belarus are: primary education for ages 6-7 to 9-10 inclusive; secondary education including intermediate school for ages 10-11 to 14-15 inclusive; and senior school for ages 15-17 inclusive. Primary and secondary school together comprise 11 years of study.

Every school has a “core curriculum” of academic subjects, such as Russian, Belarusian, Literature, Maths, History, English and others. Lyceums and gymnasiums offer programs giving a profound knowledge in some field of study.

After finishing 9 forms of a secondary school young people can continue their education in the 10th and the 11th form. They can also go to a vocational or technical school, where they study academic subjects and receive a profession. A college gives general knowledge in academic subjects and a profound knowledge in one or several subjects.

After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school, a lyceum, a gymnasium, a vocational, technical school or a college young people can start working or can go on in higher education. Higher education institutions, that is, institutes or universities, offer a 5-year programme of academic subjects for undergraduates in a variety of fields, as well as graduate course. Many universities have evening and extramural departments. They give their students an opportunity to study without leaving their jobs. Institutes and universities usually have graduate courses which give candidate or doctor degree.

Education in our country is free at most schools. All secondary schools, institutes and universities have been funded by the state. Students of institutes and universities get scholarships. At many institutes and universities there are also departments where students have to pay for their education.

2)Education in Belarus is free and compulsory from age 6 to 17. From age 6 to 10 children attend primary school where they learn how to read and write, study the basics of essential subjects. From 10 to 15 pupils attend secondary school where they study Russian, Belarusian, Literature, Maths, Natural sciences, History and a foreign language. After grade 9 pupils sit their exams and can either leave school and enter some college or continue studying in high school for two more years. After leaving school they may try to enter a university or a college.

Do you like your school? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. I like my school. School provides children not only with knowledge. It’s also a place where children spend their free time. There are many amateur groups or circles and sport sections in my school. Special teachers help children to develop their creative abilities either in sport sections, a school choir or theatre, or to improve English after classes. Ecology and tourism are also very popular today. So, schoolchildren can also be engaged in these activities.

School is our second home. No one can ever forget it.

Ask me about education in Canada.

When does school begin in Canada? How many years do children spend at school? When do classes begin? How many days a week do Canadian children go to school? Do children wear uniform?

What advice can you give me on how to prepare for exams well?

First of all I think you should be hard-working and self-organized. Try to make an effort every day. You should constantly develop your skills. Master your knowledge and remember that practice makes perfect. And I wish you good luck.
