Exercise 3.1

Choose the correct form of the verb.

 

1. They decided / were deciding to go abroad last year.

2. I worked / was working on my project when I had / was having a brilliant idea.

4. When his car broke down / was breaking down, he phoned / was phoning the garage.

Exercise 3.2

Make sentences using the Past Simple or Past Continuous + when or while.

Exercise 3.4

Put the verbs in the correct form, Past Simple or Past Continuous.

2. The plane (land) at the airport, and Katie (get off). Her parents (wait) to meet her.

Exercise 3.5

Read the text and put the verbs in the correct form.

 

Last Saturday I (1) .. (invite) my parents for dinner. I (2) … (decide) to make some delicious things, including grilled pork sausages. At about 5 o’clock I (3) … (cook) in the kitchen. My favourite CD (4) … (play) in the living room and my dog Jumpy (5) … (sleep) there quietly. Then the door bell (6) … (ring), so I (7) … (go) to open the door. Read the dialogue and use the correct form of the verbs, Past Simple or Past Continuous.

Exercise 4.1

Match a line in A with a line in B and complete the sentences from B.

Exercise 4.2

Write sentences with used to which show how things were different before.

7. The people always hurry.

Exercise 4.3

Write these sentences putting one verb in the form of used to and the other verb in the Past Simple form.

 

1. He (play) table-tennis, but he (give) it up five years ago.

He used to play table-tennis, but he gave it up five years ago.

2. He (live) in Minsk before he (go) abroad.

3. She (not like) her job at first, but then she (change) her mind.

4. He (earn) a lot, but he (retire) two years ago.

Exercise 4.4

Put the verb in brackets in the Past Simple, the Past Continuous or used to.

 

It (1) … (be) midnight and Fred (2) … (be) alone in the house. Outside it (3) … (rain) heavily. Fred (4) … (get) ready to go to bed when he suddenly (5) … (hear) a strange noise outside his room in the corridor. Neighbours? But they never (6)… (make) any noise before.
