Nowadays people all over the world travel much. Why do you think people travel so much?
Well, you know, people travel for all sorts of reasons. Travelling for pleasure is only one of them. People travel on business, to get to work, for adventure, even for education. They say: travel broadens the mind.
Not only adults are fond of travelling. Children are also crazy about it. Just remember Jim Hawkins (the main character of Stevenson's novel «The Treasure Island»), who together with his friends went to the island in search of treasures. Do you remember Tom Sawyer and Heck Finn who played pirates and travelled for adventure?
In the old days people travelled very little because travel was so slow and difficult. Think of Columbus! He crossed the Atlantic Ocean; it took him more than 2 months, and it was fantastic! People needed a fortnight to travel from London to Edinburgh by coach. Nowadays people also travel by coach, but it doesn't take them long to get to a place, because the word «coach» has another meaning and to travel by coach now is much faster than in the XIX th century.
People can travel by train, by ship (by sea), by plane (by air), by car. Travelling nowadays has become a common activity.
