More and more wild animals are on the verge of extinction and others are on the endangered list. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem?
In the modern world more and more animal species are facing extinction due to various reasons, which poses a global threat to biodiversity and human communities all around the world. Nowadays many wildlife species are declining dramatically and we need to take urgent action to protect them.
To start with, species become endangered for three main reasons, such as climate changes, loss of natural habitats and human activity. Needless to say, that animal species require a certain amount of territory in which they can hunt, forage, breed, and raise their cubs. As human civilization expands relentlessly into the wild, these natural habitats diminish and their restricted populations are more susceptible to extinction pressures.
What’s more, climate change poses a constant danger to terrestrial animals. Over millions of years, these gradual changes impact individual species so much that they can no longer survive in the new conditions of their changing habitat.
Moreover, the current extinction is most likely the result of human activity. Species can become extinct when humans hunt and fish, destroy habitats, introduce new species to areas and pollute the environment, so these drastic changes in oxygen levels, caused by industrial pollution, can suffocate entire populations.
According to scientists, the best way to protect endangered species is to protect and conserve their natural habitats as well as minimize the impact of human intervention. In some countries, such as the USA, the UK, Canada or Russia there are special funds and organizations, which raise money for wildlife protection and identify specific actions that would assist with wildlife recovery.
In my opinion, unless our nation invests in proactive, collaborative conservation of natural habitats and animal protection, we risk losing thousands of species and our wildlife heritage to preventable challenges. Therefore, altogether, we need to take firm action and recover those species already listed as threatened or endangered.
